However , above 75 percent revs the SV power drops off , whereas the DL maintains consistent acceleration until the redline . This could be because the SV is lighter and still has to meet the same power to weight ratio , so higher rpm power has been reduced . The SV does not have traction control , but as always , the throttle twists both ways ... so good old-fashioned TC is right at hand , and , besides , the power delivery is very predictable . The power difference between Suzuki ’ s standard and LAMS 650 engines is around 15kW ( 20hp ). The actual numbers are 51kW for the standard bike and 35kW for the LAMS models . The torque figures are similar and the ride feel is not so different until after about two thirds throttle where the reduced power is noticeable . The power reduction is controlled by the ECU , in essence it simply shuts down peak power . However , the important part is both the LAMS units are plenty fast enough for a learner and failing to keep up with traffic flow will never be an issue . I found the SV ’ s bottom end power a little punchier , but , perhaps , a whisker flatter up top ? Also , it has a little more exhaust bark and , arguably , a more modern look .
WHICH IS FOR YOU ? Both these machines are genuinely great to ride , no matter your experience level . They are both capable and competent , and while they won ’ t set the world on fire , they won ’ t disappoint either . For the all-roads touringminded person the DL is the machine I ’ d pick . It ’ s versatile , comfortable , has great weather protection and will take you on adventures as well as to work and back with ease . For me , as a dirt racer most of my life , the SV doesn ’ t cover quite so many bases , but for the urban commuter and weekend warrior who wants to stick to the tar seal , you really can ’ t go wrong . And they both have a proven track record . These are two LAMS machines that really are hard to beat .
