KTM CONFIRMS SMT RETURN
KTM has confirmed that the SMT sports tourer will return to the brand ’ s road-going lineup with a full reveal planned for April this year . The new SMT will be based on the now familiar 890 platforms with visuals strongly linking in with the two existing Adventure models - the 890 Adventure and Adventure R - but with 17-inch wheels among the key differences . As its name suggests , the T in SMT stands for touring , so we ’ re likely to see a number of
alterations to the platform to give the bike the right stuff for tackling long distances on the road flat out . It ’ s been roughly ten years since KTM ’ s last stab at the sports touring class , which resulted in the 990 SMT . That bike sported 115hp out of the LC8 V-twin and went head-to-head with bikes such as Triumph ’ s Tiger Sport ( then the Tiger 1050 ). Does this mean we ’ re about to see a resurgence in sports touring-focused bikes ? Time will tell .
