Everyone who has seen the video clip of the Suzuki GSX-R1000 converted to dirtbike spec roosting it up hard on gravel must surely love it ! Powerful bikes and gravel road blasting is awesome fun , but the sound of the Superbike-class inline four on the pipe with that roosting is phenomenal . This is exactly where my mind went when Suzuki NZ asked us to test their GSX-S1000GX - an all-new bike that looks kindalike an Adventure machine , but built using the heart of the legendary GSX-R1000 K5 . The reality is not quite the extreme gravelsuperbike I had hoped it might be , but that ’ s probably a good thing . Instead , the GSX- S1000GX is actually a sports-tourer with the comfortable , stretched out proportions and weather protection of an adventure bike , with the wide , sticky 17-inch rubber of a sports bike , riding on reasonably long travel suspension . Although there are more than enough niches in motorcycling , let ’ s call it a road-venture machine . So , this is a really a first ride of the bike in two parts . Editor Ben had the mission of riding the GX around Manfeild race track and , my mission , which I had chosen to accept in a Mission Impossible-style , was to ride the bike from
Suzuki ’ s HQ in Wanganui back to our base north of Auckland . Google Maps had the fastest / shortest trip at 503km with a travel time of six hours and 28 minutes . Happy days . Except it was pissing down , not particularly warm and a bit breezy . So , with caution in mind , Geoff ( KR ’ s legendary photographer ) and I set off , Geoff on the very tasty , highly visible yellow Suzuki GSX- 8R .
RIDING - ON ROAD My first thoughts were , gosh this engine sounds great and is nicely perky , the seat feels very comfy and the suspension action very plush . Then my thoughts went to the initial turn-in which is a little lethargic and what is going on with the front brake ? The brakes have excellent Brembo components , but lack much interest in slowing the Suzuki without a decent pull at the lever – quite unusual for Brembo kit . Maybe its day at the track had tired the pads a little . Well , a good 600km-plus later I had learned a lot more about the big Suzuki . The 1000cc inlinefour , transversely mounted engine is cool in all respects . Very quick , particularly at high revs , but also flexible with a great rev range compared to
