THIRTEEN CLASSIC YEARS
IS BIGGER REALLY BETTER?
Triumph Bonneville retro for 2000
retro model, and one of the first. The
only thing missing was a Triumph badge
on the tank, and Bonneville label on the
side cover. Three years later the reborn
Triumph Bonneville emerged from the
Triumph factory in England. In effect we
had the option of a Bonneville replica
made in Japan, or a British one.
It seems that the days of a British, or
Indian, motorcycle being totally built
with local parts doesn’t exist anymore.
Manufacturers look for suppliers based
on cost, quality and suitability. To what
extent, and realistically, how long, can
the icons of the great British motorcycle
era captivate the rest of the classic
motorcycle world? I suppose the simple
answer is, for as long as people ride
and take an interest in motorcycles.
Personally, I would like to see a retro
Vincent, Brough Superior, Ariel, Douglas,
or even a Francis Barnett. Maybe an Egli-
Enfield 624 Super Bullet built by the Swiss
Designer Fritz Egli would be suitable.
