remained extremely close between Watts and McBreen and this had therefore set up the championship for a winner-takes-all final two days of racing near Martinborough a week later . As the series drew to a close at the final round near Martinborough ( on June 10-11 ), it was probably Watts – who had overall been the fastest rider throughout the series , winning 36 tests from the total of 47 over the four rounds – whom most people figured would easily wrap up the title . But sport can be cruel sometimes and it didn ’ t end up that way at all . When Watts made a mistake on that final day at Martinborough , McBreen was ready to pounce . An indiscretion by Watts in receiving outside assistance was protested and the subsequent time penalty punishment imposed on Watts sent his campaign into a spin , dropping him from first to second overall for the series and
