but could see nothing. So, I went and got a straw and used that and discovered it wasn’t detecting oil. As the Peewee is more than 30 years old the manual is long-passed history, so I just winged it and put a cupful down using the smallest funnel I could find... from the kitchen cupboard. Job done... until I went to put the screw cap back on. I had sat it on top of the engine “block” and as I went to pick it up knocked it into the maelstrom of fittings, framework and cables and driveshaft and exhaust meanderings. I could see it down there but could not get it out. I’d have needed slightly curved tweezers about 20cm long to get near it. I tried a screwdriver but my poking about pushed it deeper into the mass. It wedged beside the frame and shaft, and near the exhaust bend. This was not a conundrum... this was a quandary... and had there been a quarry in the vicinity I would had sent it flying in there. My head and hands were in neutral and for a fleeting moment I considered leaving the screwed plastic in there and use a cork to stop the filler gap. But if I left it there near the exhaust it could have melted and likely ignited. Oh what a dilemma... no, make that a debacle. Then it occurred to me that as the thing had fallen down and into the mass of components it was closer to the ground than the top... of the crankcase thing. Easy. Get it from underneath, and after carefully tilting the Peewee well over on its side I was able to nudge the screw top plug free with the screwdriver and upon the ground it did happily land. I determined then and there that I would be especially careful when putting it back in place next time. That’s when I noticed that by tipping the thing way over half the oil had come out because there had been no stopper to keep it in. And I didn’t have any more so a voyage through the rain to the local auto shop was on the cards. In my life there is no such thing as “a simple task” and I have vowed that when this drought breaking monsoon wannabe passes and the dry, blue days re-emerge I shall give this Peewee a fine little thrashing down at the local school grounds. I’ve just looked out the window. Still raining. Oh what to do. I know what. I’ll worm the cat... that should be a simple enough task. You’ll probably hear the sirens.
