The suspension is relatively basic adjustment
wise, but the 160mm wheel travel at both ends
works great on road offering comfort and
composure. For this year it has a firmer rear
spring and retains the handy preload adjustment
knob. The USD 43mm forks and springs remain
the same as the outgoing model. The V-Strom is
settled under brakes, has no ugly feedback even
on quite rough tarmac at speed and generally
leaves very little room for complaint. On gravel
it’s pretty compliant too and I was happy with
the performance.
Off-road? Err... well… I never actually tried
anything other than riding across some smooth,
dry grass land, but in fairness, 50/50 tyres at least,
some decent offroad experience and a sensible
attitude would be wise before hitting the dirt.
This is no dirt bike, after all.
In general, as an all-purpose touring bike
for NZ, the Suzuki V-Strom 1050 XT is a very
capable bike, almost like it was built just for us.
It will probably be underrated by some, simply
because it’s Japanese. When in fact, it’s actually
a better choice from ease of use and price
standpoints than many more expensive, more
fancy brands. Adventure bikes make fantastic
all-road touring bikes for NZ conditions and
the 1050 is no exception. It’s plenty quick, very
comfortable with decent weather protection,
easy and relaxing to ride, reasonably frugal and
well-priced. It also looks great, has excellent
safety technology, all without being too complex.
It even remembers your TC settings. This is an
excellent update to Suzuki’s V-Strom lineage.
