OUR BIKES
I
remember watching the live stream launch of the Royal Enfield 650 models held at a beach in California . I had previously watched ‘ live launches ’ of a few Triumph models over the years , so this was just ‘ another ’. But the bike looked good , and the price sounded good too , so I took interest in the NZ launch .
HEALTH REWARD While working in Hawera as a builder a while later , we had a few hours delay , so I headed into the local dealer and test rode both of their 650cc demo bikes , and I was very impressed with their general handling and balance . I took the 650 Interceptor to a car restoration friend who was very impressed with the paint , chrome and quality of the bike . So fast forward three years and within 30mins of the Scram 411 release in NZ on social media I had ordered one from the Manawatu Royal
Enfield dealer . It ’ s my retirement gift as 50 years ago I had purchased a new BSA 500 single and felt after a range of health issues , a motorcycle reward was overdue .
MANAGEABLE AND VERY ECONOMICAL I wanted a light bike for riding around ‘ town and country ’ as I continue what seems like an endless recovery . At 185kg ( 407lb ) dry , I can manoeuvre the bike in an out of the garage easily , and when getting gas and parking at the café . After only 300km I am mightily impressed with my humble street scrambler . The suspension is a bit stiff , but I expect it will loosen a bit . The handling is very precise , and the bike super nimble . I give it a capital F for Fun . The engine torque and five speeds make riding at 90km / h on country roads a breeze . After my first fill of 91 , I checked the consumption and came up with the 85mpg
