LOCATION The start of the Hopkins Valley Track is about 10km North of Lake Ohau . To reach the starting point , you ’ ll ride along the scenic Lake Ohau Road , which is a mix of tarmac and gravel . The ride into the area is impressive on its own , offering great views of Lake Ohau and the surrounding mountains . However , as you venture into the Hopkins Valley , everything becomes increasingly dramatic .
TERRAIN AND GRADING The first 8km of the route takes you up to Monument Hut . This section is generally
straightforward with a rating of Grade 2 . However , it is susceptible to storms and washouts , which can bump the rating up to a Grade 3 , or more . From Monument Hut is the crossing of the river and from there onwards you ’ ll drop in and out of the riverbed as you make your way up the valley . The terrain alternates between 4WD tracks over river rocks , twin tracks over stable grassy banks , and numerous river crossings . The grading can change dramatically from flood to flood . If you ’ re the first one up the valley after a serious dump of rain , you ’ re likely to encounter multiple
