Tyre choice is a contentious topic among motorcyclists ; all have differing reasons for their tyre choices . Did the tyres come on the bike , maybe the rider is brand loyal , maybe price and budget is the driver ? Either way , the list is as long as your arm and I rate a tyre on how they feel to me ; not much science on my behalf , I leave that to the manufacturer . I think the average rider would run out of talent well before the shortcomings of any modern reputable tyre available in the shops today . I ride a modern 900cc sports-touring bike with a 120 / 70-17 on the front and a 180 / 55-17 on the rear , pretty standard in today ’ s modern bike world . Bikes have developed hugely in terms of materials and tech over the decades , but one thing which has not changed is the contact point for these machines to terra-firma is still the tried and proven pneumatic rubber tyre . Tyre manufacturers haven ’ t been sitting back watching the world go by , they ' ve had to keep up with the bikes and technologies . There ' s a mountain of science behind tyres to cope with different bike geometry with and without luggage , rider and pillion weights , suspension set-ups etc .
