has accompanied him on his Yamaha 660 Tenere.
Britton Adventures’ Angela Bruce said, “Glen has
needed no prompting, and we are almost a little
embarrassed at the amount of time he has sunk
into this project. When we expressed our gratitude
to Glen for all his time and effort setting up the
route he said, ‘I’m loving the poking around places
I’ve never ridden in the 24 years I’ve been blasting
around the back roads of Taihape district – I even
got work from a farmer I was talking to yesterday.
Love the excuse to ride all these local treasures...’
“Thanks Glen, we reckon you’re a treasure too!
Glen put his thinking cap on to hunt out things
which are particularly unique to the region.
Abandoned rail tunnels will feature on the ride:
Glen has managed to include five in the course,
with a couple of them used twice. One tunnel
even has a bend in it so there’s no light at the
end of the tunnel... for a short spell anyway.
“Back-country gravel road sections used in
the Gumboot Rallies of the early 2000s will link
many of the farms and stations. And Glen has
gained access to may of the local farms and
stations, but we’re not going to tell you which
ones – you’ll need to come on the ride for that.”
This Yamaha Adventure Ride will take entrants
through heartland New Zealand with plenty of
spectacular views. Based at Moawhango School and
Marae just 18km from Taihape, Camping is included
in the entry fee but if you don’t want to camp then
you can book a motel in Taihape. Angela says “There
are four and Glen advises that Aspen Court is the
‘newest and probably the flashest’. If you do want
to book a motel room then don’t muck around,
the Taihape Show is the following day (Sunday
28th) so accommodation will be in demand.”
