T here ’ s always a little prejudice around small bikes ; a preconceived idea that anything under 350cc is going to be gutless , or cheap and nasty . And I have reviewed those that would fit in that category , easily . Perhaps it was stoked by early learner bikes from new entrants to the market in the 90s and beyond , but there ’ s one thing that progress has achieved in the automotive industry and that is to generally weed out the crap . But still , I ’ ll admit to , if not disappointment then complacency , when confronted with a 200cc naked bike - even one as well finished and bright as the angular new 2020 offering from KTM .
NIMBLE AS A DIRT BIKE There are seven models in the naked lineup , the big 1290 , an 890 , a 790 , the astonishing 390 , a 250 , this 200 and a 125 . Looking in at the dealers , it is clear that there don ’ t appear to be any 250s or 125s around , so maybe they have plumped for one middle-sized offering . Although ‘ plumped ’ has a negative ring to it as well , it is perhaps undeserved , because frankly , the 200 is an astounding wee piece of kit . No , it ’ s not going to win any titles at Hampton or the Cemetery Circuit any time soon , but it will propel a grown up at legal speeds to triple figures , and could be coaxed to 130 , but it ’ s the way that it does it that is so charming .
