W hen the dust finally settled on the Yamaha-sponsored Extreme Series , it was Cambridge builder Dylan Yearbury ( Husqvarna ) who had emerged as winner in the elite Gold Grade , eventually edging out Wainuiomata ’ s Jake Whitaker ( KTM ) by the narrowest of margins , a solitary point . Third overall was Helensville ’ s Tom Buxton ( KTM ). Whitaker had led the series from the opening round near Wellington in September , but Yearbury , who had been forced to skip round one of the series because of a work-related injury , won both the following two events , in Whangamata , also in September , and then in Hawke ’ s Bay at the end of October . That meant Yearbury had reduced the margin to just a handful of points as the riders headed down to the South Island ’ s sole event , the double-header fourth and
final round near Christchurch in mid November . With only three of the four rounds of the championship to be counted and riders to discard their one worst score from the three North Island rounds , it was always going to be a tight affair and this year ’ s series had come down to the final throw of the dice . Yearbury won both days outright in Canterbury , dominating the enduro sprint prologue on the Saturday and then topping the Nut Buster hard enduro the following day . Yearbury had previously won the inaugural New Zealand Extreme Off-Road Championships outright in 2018 , so has now won two of the three series that have been run thus far . Whitaker won the series last year .
