international race meeting in France in 1905, and
in 1907 Charles rode a single cylinder Matchless
to a class victory in the first Isle of Man TT.
The mid 1970s may have been the end of the
line for the British singles in Grand Prix racing,
but it certainly wasn’t the end of them on the
race track. The G50 and 7Rs, together with
Manx Nortons, are still alive and well at classic
events. There is nothing quite like the sound
of single cylinder, four-stroke racing machines
doing what they were designed to do. And
long may they continue to entertain us.
