Yamaha ’ s tried and trusted liquid-cooled 890cc DOHC inline triple , although the CP3 high torque engine is a new Euro5 iteration . It produces 87.5kW ( 117hp ) at 10,000rpm and 93Nm of creamy torque at 7000rpm . It has a six-speed gearbox with clutch assist and slip features and comes with a quick-shifter as standard . The quick shifter is very slick on both up and down shifts . I asked the Yamaha tech crew if the quick-shifter works under fullly-open throttle at high revs – blank stares – so I tried
it out and the answer is , weirdly , no . It will if using the clutch manually . For me this was just a point of interest thing , not something I ’ d normally do on a road bike or even want to . But , with all the chat about quick-shifters lately , I got to thinking about MX starts way back in my scruffy youth . I liked the engine . It is fast without being mental .
