HAMILTON MOTORCYCLE CLUB
CENTENARY BACK ON TRACK
by Terry Stevenson
N
othing can stop a good centenary as
the Hamilton Motorcycle Club’s 100 year
celebrations press on this Labour weekend
following postponement last Easter due to the
Covid-19 Outbreak.
The key date is Saturday October 24, when
the HMCC rolls out the anniversary dinner at
the Te Kowhai airfield. Seats at The Hangar are
limited to 200 people and are filling up fast so
book your tickets online today. A Tiger Moth
will fly in as a nod to the first ever landing of
an aircraft in Hamilton during the clubs first
race meeting, in 1920.
The Classics Museum in Hamilton will feature 50
special machines from former and current HMCC
club members. The Centenary Motorcycle show
kicks off on October 24 and runs until November 8.
A road trial is also in the pipeline for Saturday
October 24, where the clubs many road riders will
vie for the prestigious Dave Connolly Memorial
Trophy. This is held every ANZAC Day however
the event became another Covid postponement.
Check the website for upcoming event details.
Club road riders get together the following
Sunday morning at 9.00am for an informal photo
shoot to replicate a 1920 Hood St photograph,
all vintage and modern bikes are welcome.
Riders then head to the Kaimai Hill lookout
where the first mention was made to form a new
motorcycle club by a few mates who regularly
met there, 100 years ago. Then returning to the
clubrooms afterwards for refreshments, and lies.
The annual swap meet is postponed until 2021,
although there’s still action aplenty with a
MotoTrials demo day at Lake Kimihia Park,
near Huntly, on Monday 26 October.
To celebrate the clubs milestone achievement
in 2020 the Waikato Art Museum will display
the HMCC club’s donated artwork from the
1970s Founders Theatre road race profits.
Interested folk can see these now valuable art
works, bikes and memorabilia from November 28
to February 8, 2021, at the museum in Hamilton.
Prominent current and former members
include MotoGP Race Director Mike Webb,
multi-NZ Superbike champion and Britten
rider Andrew Stroud, plus four-time world
champion and two-time Isle of Man TT
winner Hugh Anderson.
The HMCC has now released its book ‘100
Year Journey’ with 322 pages of HMCC history,
from the formation of the club to last month.
A great read that’s very hard to put down and
worthy of any riders coffee table. Just $50 will
get you a copy.
As well as dinner tickets, people can order T
shirts, polo shirts and the centenary book online
at www.hamiltonmcc.org.nz.
