The 2023 New Zealand Motocross Championships for both the senior men and women wrapped up in Taupo in mid- March with a sensational double-header , brought about by the interference of a cyclone , and that made for a stormy finish to the season too . Two days of intense racing – with the penultimate round at Taupo ’ s Digger McEwen Motocross Park on the Saturday and the final round at the same venue the following day – this year ’ s Aon Insurance , Pirelli tyres and Fox apparel-sponsored contest certainly delivered entertainment of the highest order . Motorcycling New Zealand was forced to alter the calendar after Cyclone Gabrielle wrecked the track at Napier , the original venue for the third round of four this season , and , to give the riders their full complement of races , rounds three and four were run over two consecutive days on the pumice and sand-based circuit on the industrial outskirts of Taupo . On the one hand , rider fitness would be sorely tested and , on the other hand , riders who were more familiar with and comfortable on the brutal Taupo track would have a distinct advantage , especially with half the series now being staged at this venue .
WOMEN BATTLE TO THE END The previous two rounds , at Balclutha and Rotorua respectively , were vastly different venues entirely , but , while three of these championship classes were decided with a race to spare , the women ’ s battle went right down to the wire . The weekend ’ s racing at Taupo represented the third and fourth rounds for the men , but
