clutch to the six-speed transmission . This means a substantial power increase of 25 % compared to the previous model . A reduced-power version is available , in line with the limitations set by the European A2 class driver ’ s license [ we ’ re waiting to see if there will be a LAMS version here in NZ - Ed ]. To reduce splashing losses and oil foaming caused by the crankshaft rotating in a wet sump engine case , a suction pump now draws the oil out of the crankcase passing it directly to the pressure pump . The cylinder heads with steel valves are redesigned together with the crankshaft ( stroke of 77mm ) and the pistons ( Ø 84mm ). The OHV valve timing is actuated by aluminium pushrods that run on roller tappets on the camshaft at the lower end . The compression ratio is 10.5:1 and it ’ s all fed by a single Ø38mm Marelli cable-actuated throttle body . The transmission has had some attention and now features a brand new , triple slot type of synchronisation to reduce gear noise and gearbox play to a minimum , particularly first gear . New exhaust pipes in a different layout ( chromed for the Special , black for the
Stone ) meet the new Euro 5 emission standards .
FATTER RUBBER , STIFFER CHASSIS Great attention was lavished on the rear end of the bike ; in the past , the limited suspension travel and narrow 130 / 80 rear tyre were weak points . To accommodate wider 150 / 70 size rubber , the swingarm of the V9 is now fitted with a new transmission shaft featuring a second Cardan joint on the rear hub . Increasing the suspension travel by 30 % to 120mm allowed a set-up with more sag , which , together with the new geometry and the Kayaba shocks , significantly reduces the ‘ elevator-effect ’ of the rear suspension . A new torsion-damper in the rear hub makes up for smoother load changes . Both versions run on Dunlop Arrowmax StreetSmart tyres and feature a Continental ABS system and an adjustable MGCT ( Moto Guzzi Traction Control ) system . To improve straight-line stability , the frame ’ s torsional rigidity has been increased by 10 % through reinforcements in the steering head area .
