TUSSOCK BUSTER
T
he Tussock Buster is one of the best
annual multi-day events on the trail ride
calendar and entries for this summer’s
event opened on December 20. The
Tussock Buster is the largest participation
motorsport event in NZ – last year over
2600 riders took on 295km of track over the two
days, thanks to an army of 70 helpers. The 2018
event will take place over this coming weekend
(March 23-25) and offers stunning riding and
views on military land in the central plateau.
This is an event that’s suitable for the
whole family with a huge number of trail
options including those suitable for bikes
85cc and over, as well as a designated kids’
track for mini-riders on bikes under 85cc.
KR contributor Mark Whyte had this to say about
the 2016 event, “I believe the team at Off Limits,
which organises this event, keeps improving it
every year and it is a ride that every trail rider
should put on their calendar as a must-do event.
The fact that only one rider out of 2600 needed
a hospital trip is testimony to the quality of the
event. I can’t wait to go back and rip the tracks
up alongside the Desert Road – the ones that
riders wish they were riding every time they
drive through the central plateau in their cars!”
We’ll be there this year, so come say hi and be
good buggers... give the editor a hand if you
find him under his bike, we reckon he’ll need it.
You’ve missed online entry, but on the day
entries are available with fees start from $60 for
the half day on Friday, to $175 for the full 2.5 days.
Camping is available for 800 people, while various
lodging options can be found in Waioru, Ohakune,
Taihape and Turangi. Hearty cooked meals will be
available onsite for the duration. Head to https://
