Peter used to race VMX in the late 80s and
early 90s for a few years, but gave up because
the older four inch travel bikes were too hard
on his back. When the rules opened up to
allow bikes with longer suspension travel,
Peter got back into it with an old TT Yamaha
and has been racing again for around five
years. “Honestly, this thing will go over
bumps and jump as good as a modern bike.
Well, maybe not quite, but on a track like
Taupo, I’m as happy to jump this as I am on a
modern bike, whereas the old TT is scary.”
Peter doesn’t sell the bikes he’s built. Well,
he hasn’t yet anyway. “Put it this way. I build
them and I build them to a quality that no
one wants to pay for, or what they cost to
build. So, I don’t really build them to sell, I
build them because I want something to ride
that’s better than average.” That’s not to say
that he wouldn’t build a bike for someone, or
build to sell, but he just doesn’t think there is
a market in New Zealand. If you want to prove
him wrong on this point, or even just want to
