Harley Davidson motorcycles have a long his- tory in Cuba. From 1917 onwards the first Harley motorcycles and parts were on sale in Cuba’s two biggest cities. Prior to the US Embargo on Cuba, (which began in 1960 and continues today), both the Police and Military used Har- ley Davidson models almost exclusively, and by the 1950s Harleys were all the rage in Cuba. There was even a group of dare-devil police officers called Team Acrobática who travelled around Cuba performing death-defying tricks on their Harleys. While there are still a few high- ly-prized vintage Harleys in Cuba, late model ones are not exactly thick on the ground. From September 22 to October 5, 2018 we a re running another motorcycle tour in Cuba. We work with a Cuban based company and use their late-model Harley Davidson machines. The tour starts and finishes in Havana and in- corporates a look at not only the tourist clichés like retro cars and buildings, but also auténtica Cuba (authentic Cuba). Riding a Harley offers up an avenue for some great conversations with locals over a shared love of the motorcycle. And to this end, during our tours we meet and ride with some local Harley enthusiasts from the Harlistas Cubanos (Cuba’s Harley Club). Britton Adventures has not scheduled a Cuba tour for 2019, and as for future tours, well... who knows? Cuba is changing so quickly that maybe its appeal will be lost with the transformation.
