all types, brands and price points, and put it
through a wide range of tests, from abrasion
testing to impact and stress testing, then
publish the results for free on their website
motocap.co.nz. What they have found is there
is no coloration between price and safety,
furthermore, brand name means precisely squat
when it comes to how well that gear will protect
you in a slide. With some well-known and popular
brands having half star garments as well as up to
4 star garments.
Sgt Peter Sowter was there to talk about his
work as a crash scene investigator, as was popular
Youtuber Bret Tkacs, and a gentleman by the name
of Heath Ling, talking about his solo journey across
the USA on his BMW adventure bike with trailer.
Attendees also had the opportunity to meet
and talk with NZ motorcycle stars such as Andrew
Stroud and Avalon Biddle, and get their photo
taken with the Britten V1000.
Suspension wizard Dave Moss of davemosstuning.
com fame was at all 11 events, setting up rider’s
bikes for ergonomics and suspension, as well
26 KIWI RIDER
as breaking down some of the preconceptions
about tire pressures.
Of course, the theme of the events was to
promote safer riding, so where would be we be
without ACC’s Ride Forever? ACC had a strong
contingent on site talking to riders about the
courses and what level course would suit them
best. Also on site was a team from NZTA, talking
about the work they’re doing to improve the
safety of NZ roads for motorcyclists. And finally,
MSAC, giving free helmet checks.
Shiny Side Up really is one of those events, that if
you have never been, you don’t know what you’re
missing out on. With a positive friendly and open
vibe going on, I felt most riders who showed up
arrived with an open mind and left having learnt
something, or at least some new ideas to think
about. Needless to say, regardless of whether I am
asked back in a professional capacity again next
year, I’ll be there will bells on. I’d like to take this
opportunity to thank the ACC Ride Forever team
for putting together such an awesome event, with
the support of NZTA and MSAC.
