The new bike’s tech is
great on the road but
non-switchable ABS is
a real compromise on
gravel roads and loose
surfaces
One thing the old has over its younger brother
is a centrestand, which, in my opinion, all
adventure bikes should have as standard.
Suzuki lists a centrestand as an optional
accessory – I’d recommend getting one. Chain
maintenance and wheel changing are so much
easier, plus parked on a centre stand it’s very
unlikely to end up on its side.
These are both good road bikes that will
handle gravel and dry offroad situations. The
new bike’s tech is great on the road but non-
switchable ABS is a real compromise on gravel
roads and loose surfaces – this is possibly the
only place the old bike has an advantage in
having no ABS at all.
The latest machine has a few other new
features like a slipper type clutch/trendy
starting system/gold spoked wheels and linked
brakes which all add to the ‘hi-techness’ but
they don’t take away from the bike’s great
value, real world ride experience, which it still
has in common with the old bike. V-Stroms
have always been and still are great bikes for
riders who want a solid bike that will do most
things well and not break the bank. Knowing
what I know after many years on the old bike,
I’d be on the new one in a flash.
