on soil conditions. Overall, this engine is fast and smooth with a reasonably linear delivery, but with a multitude of options that should suit any rider and cover a very wide range of track conditions. It shifts well too although I found the clutch can fade if you’re really little ruthless with it in sand and mud. I’d say that only pros have the skills to really test the clutch on an MX track, and most of them will probably change the clutch unit anyway. Most riders will not have a problem. SUSPENSION With the internal changes for this year, I found the suspension to be firm and bottom resistant at both ends while still managing to remain pretty plush. A top racer will always alter their suspension set-up, but the Honda’s suspension action is versatile and plush enough to suit the majority of MX racers and even keep faster cross- country guys happy. As with all proper MX bikes the suspension is highly adjustable, so experiment with the clickers and preload fully before throwing extra cash at it… I have to say, I really rate the CRF chassis. The frame gives the bike a very solid connection to the ground without harsh feedback. It feels purposeful, accurate and very controlled. As an example of how a frame can affect ride quality… older riders will remember the first CR250R with the alloy frame in 1997. I loved the look of this bike and thought it would be fabulous, until I rode it. It was brutal! No amount of suspension alterations could stop the super harsh feedback this frame gave to the body. However, this 2020 Honda chassis not only rides well, it has excellent steering characteristics. It hunts out the inside line with ease, is stable and accurate through tighter turns and is reasonably decent in fast outside line style turns too, even if not top of the class there. Honda recommends 105mm of rider sag at the rear and this does seem about right for a balance of steering prowess and stability at speed. Ergonomically the Honda is excellent. There is a slight bulge each side where the side covers flair out around the twin mufflers, but I kinda like this as it helps in gripping the bike and holding my KIWI RIDER 45
